soulgardeners is the blog of Thomas Jacobus Smith, a (white) South African Christian who writes about and works for justice and equity for the poor in his beloved country. In 2011, Smith received his MA from the University of Pretoria, with a thesis titled, Exploring the present discourse on the early Church Fathers’ teachings on poverty in order to develop proposals for the Johannesburg Church’s engagement with the poor.”  He has also published a short article on the topic: “A dialogue about the South African ‘here and now’ with the legacies of the early church fathers as interlocutors,”  Smith (now working on his PhD) is a member of Oasis South Africa, a movement of change agents.
