On article 25 (on economic, social and cultural [ESC] rights), John Humphrey, the Canadian lawyer who wrote the first draft of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, noted in his diary, “the two special interests that have tried hardest to influence the Declaration are the Catholic Church and the Communist Party – the former with considerably more success than the latter.”
