The Courageous Physician: Denis Mukwege

Son of a Pentecostal pastor in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, Denis Mukwege remembers walking with his father on pastoral visits when a child asked his father for medicine. Gently, his father explained that he was not a medical doctor. Standing beside him, observing the critical needs all around, his son thought, “Then I must become one.” Today Mukwege is a physician known for his fierce advocacy in treating women and girls who suffer the terrible effects of war. He has risked his life to stop mass rape as a war weapon, and is founder and director of Panzi Hospital, renowned worldwide for its quality care in women’s health. He has received numerous awards, including, in 2014, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, and just this week received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University.
